Audible's Terms: You're Renting, Not Buying
October 14, 2026
Audible holds the cards on what you keep and how much you pay. Here's what the terms actually say.
Audible is Amazon's audiobook subscription service. You pay monthly for credits and access to a catalog.
🔴 Credits vanish when you cancel. The moment you stop your membership, any unused credits disappear. No refund, no exception. You bought them. They have no value outside Audible.
🔴 Books you 'own' can be removed. Audible reserves the right to delete items from your library—permanently. The content you purchased and downloaded is not guaranteed to stay yours.
🔴 Your subscription auto-renews by default. Your membership charges automatically every month unless you manually cancel. You've already authorized the charge on your card.
🟡 Audible can change everything anytime. Plans, features, catalog—nothing is locked in. They can shift what you get without warning.
🟢 Cancellation is straightforward. You can kill your membership through settings, phone, or chat. At least that part isn't a maze.
The pattern is clear: Audible owns your credits, your books, and your billing cycle. You own none of it.
